RECCA SHORT STORIES
by Dylan Wells

I. New worlds

Teryn Wells felt excitement bubble up inside her as the portal charged. This would be the greatest discovery since splat! If it works of course, she reminded herself. She began to grow impatient as she watched the little green battery, slowly fill itself up. She walked over to the little round table in the middle of the room and took a bite of toast. I wonder what I’ll find on the other side! she thought. There could be anything, from more Reccans to some completely unknown race! Teryn wells, discoverer of new worlds. She rolled the title around in her mind. Unexpectedly, she felt a little bubble of worry. What if this causes Reccah to become like earth? All those monsters- “Ding!” the portal was halfway charged. No turning back now, she thought. All of a sudden she heard a small explosion come from the charging machine, causing the fire alarm to go off. Darn it! She thought. That may have short circuited the portaler- hey, that’s a good name for it! She went over to inspect the device. “Enter universe ID please.” It said. Teryn thought for a moment. She typed in “20343” the portaler hummed. “Iinitiating startup sequence,” it said. I wonder how long that will take, Teryn thought, growing more impatient by the second. “ding!” Teryn jumped back in surprise. The portal was ready. She stepped through the doorway and into the sun the other side. “welcome Teryn Wells” she heard a voice say. “we’ve been expecting you.” A strange human being with wings stepped out from behind a pedestal. Teryn Wells. Discoverer of new worlds.

EMPTY
A book by Carter Staley THE MASTER OF SPACE!!!

Earth was the place all life once lived, our scientists discovered. They discovered many things. But never how we ended up here! On a giant space city. We may never know. We think it is because the earth became radiated too much because the sun grew. The humans, having no other place to live, created this space station and moved all life here except things like the flu virus. Which got here anyways. Anyways, I am a firefighter basically. Up here we call them squinmasters. Instead of water, we shoot a liquid called squin. We use squin instead of water because

1: it may short circuit the building

2: water may become scarce if we use water.

3: water + space = nope.

So yeah, it’s an average day and I wake up in my bed. I yawn and stretch my leg.  I slide down the pole and climb into my ship. It blasts off into space. “The shape of the space station is odd.” I wonder out loud for not the first time. It looks kind of like a bunch of circles with tubes connecting them. Anyways, an alarm suddenly rings out. “Squint master 432, report to base, over.” “Yeah? And why are you saying over Gigi?” “It`s fun, Over.” I laugh into the microphone. “Seriously Cringe. We’ve got a fire on port 563. Now go, sleepyhead.” “What?” I look at my watch. It’s 55:67!!! Also known as 8:00. Sorry, I am not used to English. Anyways, I sped over to port 563 and it was REALLY burning. I noticed a kid inside the port, with his mom. “Oh no!” I think. I leap into action. I put on my space suit and attach the tube to the ship. I open the door, and jump out. My face morphs into a face of excitement. We haven’t had a fire since incident 4437! Also know we haven’t had a fire for about 13 weeks. Sorry, I’ll try harder to speak English from now on. Oh wait, I’ve got a translator right here…here… uhm…where is it? …oh, there it is... (crackle noises)… there. Ok. Can you hear me? Yes? Ok. Anyways, so I jump out with my splat gun and fire. The white liquid literally kills the fire instantly. It looks like a sjkfdfhkdjf… oh wait, it can’t translate that. Basically it looks like an explosion of squint and fire. I fly backward. “Ugh!” I scream out. I glance behind me. The oxygen is leaking, and fast, too! I try to reach my hands… I grab one end, “Aaahhh!” I shout. I connect it and black out.

I awake on something purple that feels familiar. “Grass? What the,” I look and it IS grass. Just mutated. A lot. That’s when I realize that I’m sinking. Very slowly. But yes, sinking. I tried to pull up my head. It was stuck. “Oh great.” I was stuck. In quicksand grass. Man. I pulled hard. My right hand came undone. I pushed up. I got up. And ran.         This is a work in progress! Read more soonJ!!!
